Five Nights at Freddy's Mystery Minis - Series 1 - Intro.

In August 2014, a game was released which started a franchise that bloomed in popularity. That game was Five Nights at Freddy's. I was a fan of the game since day one, finding it creepy and interesting for what it was. It was a game series that I was anticipating merchandise of for a little while. I didn't have to wait long, nor the many that also were craving merchandise, because Funko jumped on that train when they announced a ton of merchandise in early 2015. Some of that merchandise was a line of Mystery Minis.

In January 2015, a Funko catalog was leaked which contained early promotional images of the Mystery Minis, seen below. Big thanks to Negaduck9 for saving this image. It was really hard to find in this high of quality.

Interestingly this revealed the entire Series, including store exclusives. There were some figures which were never made, and some which were made and not shown.
Unreleased: Shadow Freddy (shown), "Purple" Freddy
Not Shown: Toy Freddy (Glow), Toy Chica (Beakless, Glow), Shadow Freddy (alt.)

The Shadow Freddy is interesting because it looks more accurate to how it appeared in FNaF 2. Purple Freddy I think was based off the one in the FNaF 3 mini-game. The Shadow Freddy we got was a combination of these two unreleased figures. I suspect this was to avoid having two 'shadow' Freddy characters, which is kind of iffy what/who the two characters are. I would have preferred to get the Shadow Freddy sitting though. Also note that the 'shadow' Bonnie we got is called 'Purple' Bonnie in the image (I think).  I'm guessing this was because Shadow Bonnie was still a fan-made name at that point, so 'purple' seemed best suited. It is still not clear if the purple Bonnie in the FNaF 3 minigame and the one in FNaF 2 are even the same character. The Shadow Bonnie we got in the final product was based off the one in the FNaF 3 minigame. Also note that the Crying Child had gray 'tears' instead of blue ones, which seems more accurate to how it was in the games. No Glow figures were shown, so these changes may have been a last minute decision.

At ToyFair 2015, which was released shortly after this leak, some of these figures were shown off as prototypes. Here is a good image of them below:

As you can see, Springtrap is shown in an orange motif. They are listed as prototypes, so they were probably testing the burnt yellow color. Foxy also looks a little darker than usual too.

Later Funko released promotional artwork of the regular case. Walmart and Hot Topic also showed off their exclusive cases much later on their websites.

The nice thing about this series is most figures were 1/12, with only a few being 1/36. There was only one exclusive 1/36, Shadow Freddy, which wasn't too bad in hindsight to what we usually got.

I got to say, I appreciate how much variety they put into this series. Around the time they were releasing these (or being promoted) Five Nights at Freddy's 4 was being teased and close to release. This series was able to give a good amount of variety to the first three games. You got the entire cast of the first game (sans the Cupcake), the Toy cast of the second game (and a few more characters), and Springtrap from the third game. A few of the figures were hard to tell where they were from, such as the endoskeleton. Funko was definitely given liberties with the license as we will see later with other merchandise. I don't mind personally, since that just adds to the uniqueness of it all!

Anyway, I think I rambled enough. In a future post I'll review the first series of figures (and later the other series). I hope you enjoyed, and thanks again for reading and keeping up with this blog!
