Horror Classics Mystery Minis - Series 2 - Review (Part 1)

(If you haven't already, feel free to check out the Introduction Post)

There are 20 figures in total within Funko's Horror Classic's Series 2 Mystery Mini set. This review will be broken into parts, where Part 1 will cover the first 10. I'll list them in order of date of first appearance. However, Alfred Hitchcock kind of throws a wrench in that plan. To mend this I'll treat Alfred Hitchcock as 'first appearing' in his television show "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" (1955). Likewise, I'll say Cthulhu first appeared in H.P. Lovecraft's story "The Call of Cthulhu" as part of the magazine Weird Tales (1928).
Alrighty then, let's get right on into those figures!

Character: Graf Orlok (Count Orlok)
Appearance: Nosferatu (movie, 1922)
Rarity: 1/24
One of the, if not the, oldest vampire to show up in movie history. This figure is great for several reasons. It captures his creepy vibe, the pose is nice, and the figure is on the taller side too! The small detailed fangs are neat, and how they made his fingers extra long and pointy. A character that can't get any more 'horror classic' than this! Now I'll be waiting for another classic: Dr. Caligari! Those Germans and their cool horror movie monsters!

Character: Cthulhu
Appearance: The Call of Cthulhu (short story, 1928)
Rarity: 1/24
A monster from a different medium than movies: Cthulhu from the stories of H.P. Lovecraft. It seems appropriate for being a 'horror classic', even though Cthulhu has shown up in several movies. It's not a copyright protected character (via the Box), so it's totally off the artist's interpretation. The design is great and really stands out on your shelf, especially next to the other monsters! Also he's fairly big, so definitely worth the price in plastic.

Character: Cthulhu (Glow)
Appearance: The Call of Cthulhu (short story, 1928)
Rarity: 1/36 (Regular Case only)
A variant of Cthulhu that glows in the dark. Similar to the Glow Pennywise in Series 1, this one has a special plastic. Unlike Pennywise, it's the entire figure (minus where the paint is applied) that can glow. I think it is a cool variant and fitting as the 'glow' variant for this series. He looks really cool in the dark, the glow is very vibrant!

Character: The Monster / Frankenstein / Frankenstein's Monster
Appearance: Frankenstein (movie, 1931)
Rarity: 1/12
A classic movie based off the Frankenstein book (which I highly recommend by the way) brings us the monster loved by many! The famous monster is nicely captured in a pose that seems like he's coming for you. Simple in design, so simple in the figure. He is something you could put up as a simple Halloween decoration too! What an excellent figure and addition to the series.

Character: The Creature
Appearance: Creature from the Black Lagoon (movie, 1954)
Rarity: 1/12
Another famous Universal monster, The Creature! Honestly this figure has the most detail out of any Mystery Mini I've seen to date, not just Series 2. The sculptor really put much devotion into this figure. The pose, sculpt, and size do justice to such an iconic monster! Probably the best figure in terms of quality from both Series 1 and 2.

Character: Alfred Hitchcock
Appearance: Alfred Hitchcock Presents (tv show, 1955)
Rarity: 1/12
A skilled director of many classic movies, horror and non-horror alike! Some of his more notable horror movies were The Birds (1963) (which is probably why he's holding a crow/raven) and Psycho (1960). This figure captures him well in such a style. I think this was a great choice by Funko to include in this series! Also note that compared to his variant, he has a very dark blue shirt that's nearly black (just not quite black).

Character: Alfred Hitchcock (Black and White)
Appearance: Alfred Hitchcock Presents (tv show, 1955)
Rarity: 1/72 (Regular Case only)
This is as rare variant of Alfred Hitchcock, matching the black and white appearance of the television show. I think this was a cool variant, and I would be totally okay with another b/w variant figure in the future. The cool thing is if you take the regular Alfred figure and edit it to monochrome, he matches this figure perfectly. They must have done that for the paint applications, meaning they didn't try new shades/colors. Anyway, cool figure!

Character: The Fly
Appearance: The Fly (movie, 1958)
Rarity: 1/24
A great figure of a character that is well known, but has less attention. This is the more monster-like creation from the experiment gone wrong. I'm glad they went with the original movie look versus the remake. The pose on it is great and seems dynamic. It has trouble standing at times, but otherwise a solid figure! He is one of my favorites from this series. I was very stoked to pull him when I opened up my second ever box from Series 2!

Character: David Kessler (Werewolf)
Appearance: An American Werewolf in London (movie, 1981)
Rarity: 1/24
I think I saw this guy with a Chinese menu in his hands... This is another favorite of mine from this series! I think this is the first time we've got a figure of this character before in fact? I think they could have added some of the lighter gray around the face, but the detailing in the fur alone makes-up for it! The sculpt and size of the figure are also wonderful! Note that this could have been the first werewolf from the movie (that old man), but it seems more likely to be based off the protagonist (David).

Character: Stripe (Gremlin)
Appearance: Gremlins (movie, 1984)
Rarity: 1/12
This was a great figure to choose for the line! I wish we got Gizmo too, but the Cinema Gremlin was great. You can even treat him like a regular henchman Gremlin if you want (ignoring the mohawk of course). I think the sculpt and size of the figure are wonderful. They went all out on paint too. Definitely would be open to more Gremlin characters in the future!

Whew, what a line-up, and we're only half-way through! I think that about wraps things up for the first part of the Review. Keep tuned for the next part in a future Post! Thanks for your time and hope you enjoyed it!
